Harlan York
Immigration Law - Newark, NJ

In our first consultation, I constantly explain that there are no shortcuts. Some people tell me of family members or friends who allegedly received their papers in a very short time. To that I reply, over and over, that there are no guarantees other than we will do our absolute best as a team of dedicated lawyers to help them.

And I tell them that if we can help them, we will. Then I'll say, 'if we cannot do it, please save your money and do not go to someone who promises them things that I know to be impossible, even fraudulent.'

I chose immigration law because I knew it would be rewarding and enjoyable - I could help people, all kinds of people, personally and directly. One of the most important parts of being an attorney is knowing how to address and interact with people of all backgrounds - I think it was my father who taught me that skill.

Our firm is exclusively devoted to immigration law, attracting clients from New Jersey first and foremost, but those people live all over the state. We also have clients in many other states and another segment waiting all over the world to arrive here in America. Today, clients research more on the law, largely because of the internet. As a result, clients are more knowledgeable than they were in the 1990s. The only caveat, though, is that they sometimes read sources that are outdated or contain misinformation.

I do not know when we will get another immigration reform. The last time was in 1996, when the last major change occurred in Congress. Reform will likely allow more immigrants to avail themselves of relief under the law, but we also anticipate increased enforcement. As a firm that does a great deal of green card and visa work but also concentrates heavily in deportation defense, we envision more work in all areas. And we've done countless successful appeals on behalf of clients.

I love what I do - I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't. Our practice is always busy - we don't make special promises. We just work hard for our clients - and strive to deliver them the results and outcomes they need.
