Divorce Law - Garden City, NY

The practice of matrimonial law is unlike any other in the legal profession. Not only does it require competence in the ever-changing statutory and case-law areas of the practice, it also requires compassion and understanding of a clientele going through the enormously stressful process of reorganizing their lives, and most often, the lives of their children. The practitioners in this field must therefore perfect both skills to serve their clients most effectively.

My background in the law began in the litigation department of one of New York City's top law firms. I was proud of my work product for major corporations, going through every aspect of litigation imaginable, but I longed for "human" contact with "human" impact. I therefore switched my practice to matrimonial law in 1982, just after the enactment of New York's equitable distribution laws. To my surprise, much of my commercial litigation background was useful and sought after in a statutory arena that required complex valuations, tax impacting and negotiation skills.

I now have the perfect practice. I believe I serve my clients best when I help them focus on the financial realities of their matter, while handling their emotional concerns with the patience and respect such emotions deserve and require.

While I pride myself on my trial-law skills, I became a certified divorce mediator in 1995, to assist people in reaching an amicable resolution of their matrimonial problems, if possible. That aspect of my practice has also been enormously rewarding, although my main practice is still divorce litigation. "Litigation" does not mean that every case must be decided in the courtroom. Indeed, the best resolutions are worked outside that forum. However, it is sometimes necessary to work through the litigation process to a point where a resolution can be reached. And that is our job, knowing when our client is ready for a resolution, and whether that resolution in their best interest. The true skill in our profession is getting there - and knowing we have arrived at it.
