Mark I. Silberman, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Plastic Surgery - Great Neck, NY

My plastic surgical practice is unique in that, despite the increasing volume of patients, I am extremely personal in my approach. Many plastic surgeons rely on para-medical personnel (physician's assistants, nurses, etc) to manage pre- and post-operative care. Although I have an excellent and experienced staff, I continue to offer personal care long before and long after the surgery is completed. For me, it is paramount to maintain my involvement throughout the surgical experience.

Before any surgical procedure is considered, I often spend a significant amount of time with my patients analyzing their issues and evaluating their expectations.

I encourage them to ask a lot of questions during the consultation. Considering "a thousand details," many of which even the patient may not have thought of, is part of my responsibility. Together, we look at my extensive collection of previous photographs to achieve a desirable surgical plan.

As these are often important and consequential decisions, I understand that many patients consult with a number of other plastic surgeons. Most patients who meet with me seem to appreciate my passion for the work - they see how much I care about their satisfaction. In the end it is ultimately the lifelong results that matter the most. Just as I am being "interviewed" I am "interviewing" my prospective patients as well. I bring all of my years of experience to bear and analyze the patient's expectations. Are they appropriate? Are they realistic?

The procedure must also be tailored to the individual's face, figure, size, age, and overall appearance. The ultimate result must achieve a sense of proportion and harmony. Toward that effort, I am often direct and meticulous in my explanations - not infrequently I will suggest that surgery may not be appropriate or, at times, I will simply decline to perform a procedure. It is critical to me that, in the end, the patient obtains the desired result.

Post-operatively, I remain personally involved in my patient's care. All post-op discussions, dressings and sutures are managed by me. This care may last days, weeks, months, even years. Regardless, I feel strongly that this is an important part of my relationship with my patients.

Although I have extensive experience in a wide variety of cosmetic procedures, the post- mastectomy breast reconstruction patients often represent the most gratifying part of my practice. Overall, I think that my patients can feel the passion I have for my craft. My work is unique and very demanding, yet I am truly happy in my career and proud of my practice. I think my patients appreciate the passion and dedication I have for plastic surgery.
